Ruth Cleland, Gary McMillan, Emily Pauling and Hayden Prujean present Room at the Blue Oyster Gallery. Painting, drawing, sculpture and performance make up the installations in this exhibition.
These four artists have been thinking about what goes on behind closed doors. Beginning with the bald concept ‘room’ developed into four distinct takes on what it means to be alone in a room.
Each idea presented in the space is an analysis of the room both psychological and physical.
Tension is a key word, and aside from the original unifying premise it is what holds the independent works in relation to each other. Tension that is maintained by the dualisms between private and public, the psychological tensions of loneliness, longing and obsession, the tension presented by the difficulties of balancing safety with the restrictions security imposes explored in a personal context but with wider social ramifications especially in the light of the worlds current political climate. Alongside ideas of social control and not very well submerged desires, sexual tension and taboo is inevitably present also
